Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has heaped praise on the in-form Sai Sudharsan but cautioned that red-ball cricket in England will be a vastly different challenge compared to the IPL and white-ball formats.

Following a dream run in IPL 2025, where he emerged as the tournament’s highest run-scorer, and a strong domestic season with Tamil Nadu, Sudharsan has earned his maiden Test call-up for India’s upcoming five-match series against England.

His recent form, combined with prior experience playing county cricket for Surrey, places him as a strong contender to receive his Test cap. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has already expressed confidence in Sudharsan’s technique to succeed in English conditions — a sentiment Ganguly echoes, though with a word of advice.

Fight hard in England: Ganguly’s message for Sudharsan

“Very good player, but IPL, white-ball and Test cricket in England are different,” Ganguly told RevSportz. “But I think he has got the technique and temperament. He scores in big matches. Again, for him, nothing changes – fight hard in these conditions, get through the new ball as he is a top-order batsman.

All eyeballs will be on Sudharsan, not only because he is likely to make his Test debut, but also because he is the frontrunner for the crucial number 3 spot. With Virat Kohli retiring from Test cricket, Shubman Gill is expected to move to number 4, leaving the number 3 position up for grabs.

Over the next two months, Sudharsan’s technique will be thoroughly tested. However, if he can replicate the composure and assurance he has shown thus far in his career, he stands a strong chance of thriving in the longest format.
