England speedster Jofra Archer could make a long-awaited return to Test cricket if he proves his fitness in time for the second match of the England-India series at Edgbaston.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) selector Luke Wright confirmed that Archer’s progress will be closely observed when he turns out for Sussex in their County Championship fixture against Durham at Chester-le-Street, beginning June 22.

Archer, who last played a Test in February 2021 against India in Ahmedabad, was initially set to feature for England Lions in their unofficial Test against India A. However, a thumb ligament injury—sustained during fielding in the IPL—forced him to withdraw.

“Jof’s been coming along well,” Wright said. “The plan is for him to build up through Sussex’s second XI matches. If things go smoothly, he’ll play against Durham during the first Test. Provided there are no setbacks, he could be in contention for the second Test.”

The 29-year-old has battled multiple injuries since his last appearance in red-ball cricket, but still boasts an impressive record—42 wickets from 13 Tests at an average of 31.04, including two six-wicket hauls during the 2019 Ashes.

Wright added, “As with all our bowlers, it’s a day-by-day process. But if he gets through the Durham match without issue, he’ll be considered for selection.”

England have already announced their squad for the opening Test at Headingley. Gus Atkinson, sidelined with a hamstring issue, is also expected to be in the mix for the second match alongside Archer.
