India opener KL Rahul has achieved a significant milestone — he has now surpassed 1,000 runs in Test matches against England. He reached the mark on Day 3 of the first Test at Headingley, picking up from where he left off after a gritty 42 in the first innings.

Rahul becomes the 17th Indian to score over 1,000 Test runs against England — a notable feat given the challenging conditions Indian batters typically face here. Across 14 Tests against England, Rahul now averages close to 40 — well above his overall career average of around 33.

A Consistent Performer in English Condition

What truly stands out is how effectively he has handled English conditions. Of his 1,000-plus runs, more than 640 have come in England itself, where the ball tends to swing and seam throughout the day. As an opener, scoring over 600 runs in such conditions is a rare achievement for an Indian batter.

Fans will recall some of his standout performances — the 199 in Chennai in 2016, a superb 149 at The Oval in 2018, and a memorable century at Lord’s in 2021 that helped set up a famous win. With Test hundreds in England, Australia, and South Africa, Rahul ranks among the few Indian openers to have cracked the SENA code.

Overall, he has now amassed over 3,300 Test runs, including eight centuries and 17 fifties. He also boasts more than 7,500 runs in First-Class cricket.
With the series still finely poised, India will be hoping Rahul’s steady starts continue to provide a solid foundation for big totals in challenging conditions.
