Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has heaped praise on his long-time bowling partner Ravindra Jadeja, lauding his consistent and invaluable contributions with the bat in overseas conditions. The comments come ahead of India’s highly anticipated five-Test series against England, beginning on 20 June in Leeds.
Having toured England four times, Jadeja is the most experienced member of India’s 18-man squad selected for the upcoming tour. His recent record in English conditions stands out, particularly his century at Edgbaston in 2022, when he scored a composed 104 after India had slumped to 98/5. Back in 2020, he notched a crucial half-century while playing a supporting role to Ajinkya Rahane, who scored a match-winning century.
Notably, three of Jadeja’s four Test centuries have come in the past three years. Since 2017, he’s been one of India’s most reliable middle-order batters.
Ashwin in awe of Jadeja’s batting
“The kind of impact he has had on the batting line-up is amazing,” Ashwin told RevSportz. “The way he batted, the way he shouldered responsibility. He has taken time and has led [India] to some unbelievable victories. There was this Trent bridge knock that he played that was impactful. We would have ended up winning that match if it didn’t get washed out the next day. He has been a silent warrior in Test matches, as a batter in SENA countries.”
His batting numbers over the past three years are good enough to select him as a specialist batter. In fact, his average in that period surpasses that of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and even current Test skipper Shubman Gill.
Jadeja averages close to 30 in England, and over 30 in Australia, New Zealand, and the West Indies. As India gear up for the England challenge, Jadeja is expected to play a key role, not just with the ball but with crucial contributions down the order.
