Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting believes Arshdeep Singh has the tools to succeed as a frontline pacer during India’s upcoming Test tour of England. Arshdeep recently earned his maiden Test call-up for the five-match series, led by Shubman Gill. Notably, he is the only left-arm seamer in the squad and brings valuable experience of English conditions, having previously played county cricket for Kent.
Speaking on The ICC Review, Ponting expressed strong support for Arshdeep’s inclusion, highlighting both his character and potential impact.
“I’ve had a good chance to get to know him really well. He’s a great character to have around the team,” said Ricky Ponting, who coaches Arshdeep at Punjab Kings in the IPL. “He’s a fun-loving guy and he’s a very laid-back around the group, which is great. Which is what we all like.
Ponting also shared that he acknowledged Arshdeep’s selection in front of the team shortly after the squad was announced by the BCCI.
“As soon as the squad was announced the other day, the Test squad, the first thing I did in our team meeting was to make sure that I acknowledged that Arshdeep had been picked in front of everybody and just congratulated him in front of everybody. I think it’s well deserved and I think he’ll bowl well in England as well.”
Arshdeep has already established himself as a proven wicket-taker in white-ball cricket and will now look to make his mark in the longer format. With his left-arm angle and familiarity with English pitches, his chances of a Test debut look promising.
