India’s Test vice-captain Rishabh Pant has received an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during Day 4 of the first Test against England at Headingley. He has also been handed one demerit point—his first in a 24-month period.

The ICC confirmed that Pant violated Article 2.8 of the Code of Conduct, which pertains to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match.”

The incident occurred in the 61st over of England’s first innings, when Pant was seen protesting the condition of the ball while Ben Stokes and Harry Brook were at the crease. After the umpires, having used the ball gauge, declined to replace the ball, Pant expressed his frustration by throwing it to the ground in front of on-field umpire Paul Reiffel.

“The wicketkeeper showed his dissent by throwing the ball on the ground in front of the umpires after they refused to change it,” stated the ICC in an official release.

Pant accepted the charge and the sanction imposed by match referee Richie Richardson. As a result, no formal hearing was required. The charge was laid by on-field umpires Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney.

Under ICC rules, the accumulation of four or more demerit points within two years can result in suspension. Two suspension points equate to a ban from either one Test, two ODIs, or two T20Is.
