Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has offered valuable advice to Shubman Gill on how to approach his batting in the upcoming five-match Test series between India and England, which begins on 20 June in Leeds.
Batting in England is expected to be challenging, with conditions likely to favour seam and swing bowling. For Gill, who has struggled overseas—particularly in England—the challenge is even greater. He has scored just 88 runs in Tests on English soil at a modest average of 14.66.
Ganguly, who famously scored a century on debut at Lord’s and enjoyed a successful stint in England, has urged Gill to rely on his front-foot play and trust his defensive technique.
“England is a place where you need to be on the front foot quite a bit,” Ganguly told RevSportz. “It’s not Australia or South Africa, where you can hang on the back foot and still play. In New Zealand and England, it’s going to swing and seam, so you’ve got to be on the front foot and have a good defence. You’ve got to fight here, where first hour, post lunch, post tea would be different. So, you can’t be 50-4 in the first two hours. You’ve got to be 50-1, then you are in a position to win the Test match, and I think that’s where India needs to be.”
Gill will be under a lot of pressure as this will be his first series as Test captain. With an inexperienced squad under his command, the onus is on him to lead with authority and enhance both his personal record and the team’s performance.
