Veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has shared his views on young opener Abhishek Sharma’s fearless batting. Abhishek has impressed everyone with his fearless batting in the New Zealand series, but his golden duck in the fourth T20I, and that too in a big chase, showed the risks that come with his attacking style.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Rahane pointed out Abhishek’s approach and said: “With Abhishek Sharma, this is going to happen. He plays a high-risk game. When it comes off, he’llbe a match-winner—we all know that. But there will be times when he gets out for zero, even first ball. That can happen in a World Cup. I thought the Indian batting today wasn’tdependent on Abhishek Sharma alone. Collectively, they were very good. They played with seven batters, and you could clearly see the difference that having seven instead of eight makes in a side.”
In the match, New Zealand posted a big total of 215 runs for the loss of seven wickets with the help of Tim Seifert (62) and Devon Conway (44). While chasing, India’s batting order collapsed despite fighting innings from Shivam Dube (65) and Rinku Singh (39), and the hosts were bowled out for 165. New Zealand secured a convincing 50-run win.
In the fifth and final T20I at Thiruvananthapuram on January 31, Abhishek added a quick 30 runs off 16 balls. His knock included four boundaries and two maximums at a strike rate of 187.50, and it helped the hosts secure a 4-1 series win against New Zealand.
