Sanju Samson (PC: BCCI)

Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson had another disappointing outing in the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand in Thiruvananthapuram on 31 January. Playing his first international game at his home ground, the Indian opener could only score six runs off six balls before being dismissed by Lockie Ferguson.

In the third over, Samson faced Ferguson and looked uncomfortable against the pace. He attempted a shot in the cover region against a length ball bowled outside off stump but ended up edging it to deep third man, where Bevon Jacob took a fine catch near the boundary rope. Samson walked back to the pavilion, leaving India at 31/1.

This was another failure for Samson, who has struggled with the bat throughout the series. In five matches, he has scored only 46 runs at a poor average of 9.20. His form has raised questions about his consistency at the international level. During the Asia Cup last year, he recorded his last fifty against Oman in Abu Dhabi.

While Samson had another off day with the bat, other Indian batters enjoyed the batting-friendly conditions at the Greenfield Stadium. India posted 271 in the allotted 20 overs after opting to bat first. Ishan Kishan top-scored for India, smashing 103 off 43 deliveries, while Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya also enjoyed time in the middle.
