India batter Shreyas Iyer has shared his frightening experience after suffering a spleen injury during the third ODI against Australia on October 25. He revealed how “excruciatingly painful” the injury was and said the experience changed his outlook and taught him patience.
After recovering, he made a strong comeback by scoring 49 runs in India’s ODI series opener against New Zealand in Vadodara on January 11.
Speaking to the broadcasters ahead of the second ODI in Rajkot on January 14, Iyer shared how he came to know the seriousness of his injury. “It was painful, excruciatingly painful. I didn’t realise how tough that injury was until I got to know that the spleen is an important part of our body, and it’san organ. I didn’t even know the word before,” Iyer said.
He added that he only realised the seriousness of the issue when he was admitted to the hospital. “Then the next day, when I was admitted to the hospital, I realised, ‘Wow, okay, this was a severe injury.’ Yes, it was (spleen was a new word I learnt that day),” Iyer explained.
Iyer also spoke about how the injury gave him time to rejuvenate. He said, “But this injury especially gave me time to reflect upon myself, rejuvenate, and also relax as much as possible, because it’s not like you can get up and start working out straight away.”
Iyer said he followed medical advice and guidelines carefully to recover on time. “You need to give yourself a lot of time, and I was told that within six to eight weeks, I would be back to normal and then I could start training. So I just followed the proper guidelines I was provided with, and after that it was smooth sailing,” he revealed.
However, in the second ODI in Rajkot, he had a poor outing, scoring only 8 off 17.
