New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips credited Daryl Mitchell for instilling confidence in him and taking the pressure off at the start of his innings, which helped him score his first hundred against India at Indore’s Holkar Stadium.
Batting at number five, Phillips made full use of the ideal batting conditions to smash his second ODI century, which came off just 83 balls. Phillips revealed that there was a passage in the game when he was edgy and that Mitchell helped him get through that tough phase.
“There was a certain stage around the 30th overs where I was a bit edgy, but playing with Mitchell gives you a lot of confidence. He was striking the ball well and that took the pressure off me,” Phillips said while speaking to broadcasters during the mid-innings break.
At the end of the 25th over, Phillips said he was happy with the total New Zealand posted, given that they had projected a score of around 280 after India bowled well in the middle phase.
“We were looking at 280 during the 25th over. They bowled really well in the middle overs, so we are happy to take 337. There was a bit in it when Jadeja was bowling, in terms of turn,” he added.
The 29-year-old Phillips added 219 runs with Daryl Mitchell to lift his team from 58/3. Phillips scored 106 off 88 balls, an innings laced with nine fours and three sixes.
