India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav expressed his delight at returning to form after being adjudged Player of the Series against New Zealand.

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Suryakumar said:

“It feels really good. It’s been a long year and a long wait for moments like this. I’ve always dreamed about when this time would come. You (Murali Kartik) actually said it before the last series in Ahmedabad – when SKY is there, don’t fear. I just kept doing the same things I’d been doing over the last year and stuck to my routines. I knew I wasn’t out of form, just out of runs. It’s been a very good series, and going into the World Cup feeling like this is really special. I think the sky wasn’t blue for a year, but that’s life. It’s part of the journey. I took it in my stride, went back to the drawing board, and tried to understand what was going wrong. I knew my time would come if I kept doing the small things right. I’m really happy with how things have turned out.”

Batting at number four, Suryakumar played a blinder against New Zealand in the final T20I of the five-match series. He stitched together a 137-run partnership off just 57 balls with Ishan Kishan, which was instrumental in taking India to 271/5. The Mumbai-based batter scored 63 off 30 balls, including four fours and six sixes, at a strike rate of 210. Overall, across the series, the 35-year-old amassed 242 runs from five matches, with the help of three fifties at an average of 80.66.

Suryakumar endured a difficult year in international T20Is, managing only 218 runs from 21 matches at an average of 13.62. The dynamic right-handed batter did not score a single fifty during the year, with his highest score being an unbeaten 47. Ahead of the World Cup, the former world number one ranked batter has now regained his mojo with the bat.
