India legend Sunil Gavaskar said that Tilak Varma played one of the best innings of the Asia Cup 2025 in the final against Pakistan.

Speaking to India Today, the former India opener said that he also enjoyed Abhishek Sharma’s performances throughout the tournament.

“I mean, Abhishek has played a few good innings. To be honest, I didn’t see all the matches, but from an Indian point of view, you could say that, yes,” Gavaskar told India Today. “I think the innings that Abhishek played, and today’s innings – I think they were the best in the tournament.”

Tilak played a match-winning knock yesterday to guide India to their ninth Asia Cup title. The southpaw came to the crease when India were struggling at 10 for 2, after losing the in-form Abhishek Sharma and captain Suryakumar Yadav. Soon after, Gill was also dismissed, leaving India at 20 for 3. Tilak then stitched together a 57-run partnership from 50 balls with Sanju Samson, providing India with much-needed stability. Following Samson’s departure, Tilak added a 60-run partnership with Shivam Dube that took India close to victory.

Tilak remained unbeaten on 69 off 53 balls, including three fours and four sixes, at a strike rate of 130.19. One of the standout features of Tilak’s innings was that he never succumbed to the pressure and kept the scoreboard ticking, which earned him praise from Gavaskar.

“He made every ball count for something. He was knocking it around for singles, running between the wickets, getting the circulation going in the legs. That helps your footwork as well. And with the left-hand, right-hand combination, the opposition captain has to consider changing the field, and the bowler has to adjust his line and length – that eventually helps both batters,” Gavaskar added.
