India’s wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is on the verge of achieving two major personal milestones as India prepares for the Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan in Dubai on 28 September. Despite being demoted from opener to a middle-order position, Samson has continued to contribute crucial runs and is now close to making history.
Samson has scored 108 runs so far in the tournament and needs just 64 more to break Rishabh Pant’s record for the most runs by an Indian wicketkeeper in a multi-nation T20I tournament. Pant amassed 171 runs during the 2024 T20 World Cup, while MS Dhoni is second on the list with 154 runs from the 2007 edition. One more impactful innings could see Samson surpass both. The right-handed batter is also nearing another milestone. He requires only 31 more runs to reach 1,000 runs in T20Is.
The Kerala-based cricketer will become the 12th Indian to cross this mark, provided he gets the opportunity to bat in the final at the Dubai International Stadium.
Samson has proven himself as a dependable opener but has been shuffled around the batting order during this Asia Cup. He has mostly batted at number five or lower, but was promoted to number three against Oman, where he scored a half-century and was named Player of the Match.
He also scored 13 runs against Pakistan, 39 against Sri Lanka, and did not bat against Bangladesh. These frequent changes may have disrupted his rhythm, but not his determination.
