Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes that Team India should not “overexpose” their main spinners, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy, before the upcoming 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said: “We shouldn’t overexpose Varun Chakaravarthy. We shouldn’t do that. One should save him. We will be playing against South Africa and New Zealand, and we can possibly play against these teams in the T20 World Cup. Varun’s mystery is a big factor. He has been playing for many years, but he’s still able to hold his own.”
Kuldeep and Varun are in lethal form this year in T20Is. They have single-handedly turned many matches for the team. The left-arm spinner made a comeback to the Indian team after more than a year, and in his comeback match, he took a four-fer against the UAE. Overall in 2025, he has taken 19 wickets in eight innings. On the other hand, Varun has taken 26 wickets in 14 innings.
Ashwin believes that these spinners will be crucial for India in the World Cup, so they should not be revealed too much in front of the teams that India are likely to face in the mega tournament.
“But exposing both Kuldeep and Varun in large quantities is something I’ll refrain from. I think eventually they have to play together in the World Cup, but not overexposing the mystery of Varun, because these teams can face us in the knockouts of the T20 World Cup. Don’t give them enough time to figure him out. The more they play against him, they will also have a chance of figuring it out. Mystery should remain mystery.”
