IND vs SA: Bavuma Deflects ‘Grovel’ Row, Highlights India’s ‘Bauna’ Jibe

South Africa Test captain Temba Bavuma did not defend head coach Shukri Conrad’s “grovel” comments, but he fired shots at the Indian team by saying that “certain guys crossed the line” after winning the second Test and sealing the 2–0 series victory.

Bavuma’s remark was aimed at Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and a few other Indian players who mocked Bavuma’s height by calling him “Bauna” during the first Test at Eden Gardens. It is pertinent to note that bauna is generally used to describe a shorter person and can be considered offensive.

Conrad also caused a stir after using the word “grovel” at the press conference on day four. Bavuma left it to the coach to defend himself, but he also offered an indirect reminder of what had been said to him in Kolkata.

“Comments made by the coach came to me this morning. I was focused on the game and didn’t have a chance to speak to him,” said Bavuma when asked about Conrad’s remarks at the post-match press conference after the second Test. “Shukri is close to 60 years old and he will have a look at his comments. But in this series certain guys have also crossed the line. I’m not saying the coach crossed the line, but he will surely think about it.”

In Guwahati, the Proteas handed India their biggest defeat (by runs) in Test cricket. With the win at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Bavuma keeps his unbeaten record intact.
