South Africa Test captain Temba Bavuma has been included in the 16-member squad for the second four-day match of the series, which will be played from 6–9 October. These two multi-day matches are part of the build-up to the Test series between India and South Africa.

Bavuma is currently nursing a calf injury that has kept him out of action during the ongoing Test series in Pakistan. The World Test Championship-winning skipper sustained the injury during the recent white-ball tour of England. While announcing the squads for the Pakistan tour, head coach Shukri Conrad provided an update on Bavuma, saying: “Temba’s calf strain will unfortunately keep him sidelined for six to eight weeks, but the focus is on giving him the best chance to be fully ready for the India tour in November.”

The 35-year-old Bavuma was dearly missed over the past week as the Proteas lost the first Test in Lahore by 93 runs. Bavuma, who averages 38.22 in Test cricket, will be closely monitored during the one-off game in the South Africa ‘A’ series as he works towards a comeback for the much-anticipated Test series against India in November.

The BCCI’s Centre of Excellence will host the two four-day matches between India A and South Africa A. Four days after the conclusion of this series, South Africa will lock horns with India in the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, beginning on 14 November. It will be followed by the second Test at the ACA Stadium in Barsapara, Guwahati.

This will be South Africa’s second successive away tour to the subcontinent following the ongoing one in Pakistan, and their second in the 2025–2027 World Test Championship cycle.
