India’s young batter Tilak Varma said his growth in international cricket has been shaped by the senior players and the head coach. Tilak spoke about the support and guidance he received from Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Gautam Gambhir.
In a conversation with JioStar’s ‘Follow The Blues’, Tilak shared, “ODI and Test cricket feel like my game because I enjoy the longer format. I’m really excited to play more ODIs as well.”
He credited Rohit and Virat, explaining that their presence has boosted his confidence. Recently, India took a 1-0 lead in the ODI series against South Africa after a narrow 17-run win. In that match, Virat scored his 52nd century, while Rohit and Rahul both scored 50-plus runs, which helped India post a strong total of 398/8. In reply, South Africa were bowled out for 332 runs.
Tilak also explained how much he learns from the veterans. He said, “When Rohit bhai and Virat bhai are in the same team, the confidence level is completely different. They have so much experience and knowledge, and I try to take as much advice from them as possible to get better. I speak to Virat bhai a lot, especially about fitness and running between the wickets. His intensity is incredible. I love running too, and I feel I’m pretty quick, so I really enjoy that part of the game. If we play together, running between the wickets with him is something I look forward to.”
Tilak also praised head coach Gambhir, saying, “Gautam sir always gives me confidence… He keeps challenging me because he believes I have the capability. That backing means a lot to me.”
Looking ahead, he said, “Whatever opportunities I get against South Africa, I want to finish those matches… I’mchallenging myself to perform in the longer formats and grow as an individual player.”
