After playing a major part in the team’s historic series win over India, South Africa spinner Simon Harmer said that the team’s milestones mean more to him than his personal records, as he walked away with the Player of the Series award in India.

A 25-year wait for the Proteas came to an end as they secured their first Test series win in India since 2000, and their second overall. With 17 wickets to his name in two matches, Harmer finished the series as the highest wicket-taker.

The veteran off-spinner was one of the architects of the famous win. He claimed the Player of the Match award in the first Test in Kolkata for his twin four-fors, and the Player of the Series award after his nine-wicket haul in the Guwahati Test.

Harmer was part of the squad that suffered a heavy 3–0 defeat by India in 2015. Fast-forward to 2025, he is part of a history-making group.

“Obviously, I’ve spoken about it a bit; 2015 was a tough time,” Harmer said after the match. “To be on the other end of that, after winning 2–0 in India again, is a bonus. The biggest thing for me is the team we have, the enjoyment. I think you can see it on TV — how excited everybody is for one another’s success. I think that brings me the biggest joy: sharing a changing room with these guys, world Test champions, and being part of that, being part of the team’s success. For me, those are the personal wins, not the personal milestones.”

Not only did Harmer play an important role in his team’s win, he also claimed a few records along the way. In four Tests in India, Harmer has taken 27 wickets at an average of 15.03. With this tally, he now has the most Test wickets for South Africa in India, surpassing Dale Steyn’s tally of 26 wickets.
