Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has suggested that India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, should avoid playing his favourite leg-side pick-up shot until he regains his form.
Speaking during his commentary stint in the third T20I, Gavaskar said that although the shot has fetched the dynamic batter plenty of runs in the past, he should keep it in “cold storage” for some time.
“It has been a very, very productive shot for him,” Gavaskar said while on broadcasting duties. “But now, when you are not in form, it has only gone up in the air instead of going the distance and landing well inside the boundary. So maybe, until he starts to get going, he should look to keep that shot in cold storage.”
Gavaskar also explained the reasoning behind his suggestion.
“Because it’s getting him out, and India doesn’t require Suryakumar Yadav to score only 12 runs,” he reasoned.
Suryakumar came in to bat at No. 4 when India needed just 26 runs in the third T20I of the ongoing five-match series against South Africa in Dharamsala. However, after scoring just 12 runs off 11 balls, he was caught by Ottneil Baartman off the bowling of Lungi Ngidi while attempting the pick-up shot.
It has been a tough year for the Indian skipper in T20Is. So far in this year, the 35-year-old has not managed to get past the fifty-run mark.
