Quinton de Kock played a match-winning innings of 90 to help South Africa secure a 51-run victory over India in the second T20I of the five-match series in New Chandigarh, levelling the series 1–1.
The Proteas wicketkeeper was adjudged Player of the Match for top-scoring in the game. Speaking about his knock and the match in the post-match presentation, De Kock said:
“I think it was just a technical thing I needed to be aware of, and after that it would sort of play out naturally. That’s pretty much all it boils down to. I think the wicket was a bit slow up front, and it felt like it took some time to get to the bat. When we were batting, any new batsman would find it a bit harder to come in. The ball didn’t feel like it was wet; it still felt dry. So it was just a matter of myself and Aiden (Markram) holding on and trying to build a partnership, because it wasn’t going to be easy for the next guy walking in.”
The left-handed batter built a second-wicket partnership of 83 runs with captain Aiden Markram, which laid the foundation for a big score. De Kock played an aggressive innings, scoring his 90 off just 46 balls, including five fours and seven sixes, at a strike rate of 195.65.
With dew being a factor for much of the match, De Kock also gave insights into how the pitch played in both innings.
“And when the Indian team batted, it went the other way. It got two-paced with a bit more pace in it, it quickened up and everything moved around at pace. When we batted, it moved around quite slowly. So that’s really the difference between the conditions in the two innings,” he added.
