Sri Lanka head coach Sanath Jayasuriya has expressed his disappointment after Sri Lanka failed to qualify for the final of the Asia Cup 2025.

Speaking at the press conference, the former Sri Lanka captain said that if his team shows consistency, then they have a bright future.

“Apart from that Bangladesh game, I’m fairly satisfied, though disappointed not to reach the final,” Jayasuriya said at the press conference. “We have the batting and bowling quality. The key is to execute plans according to the conditions and the opposition. If we do that consistently, this team can go very far.”

India beat Sri Lanka in a close contest that went to the Super Over in the final match of the Super Four stage. Speaking about the match, the former Sri Lankan opener said that they almost chased down a big total, which highlights the standard of the side.

“I would’ve preferred to finish games in normal time. No captain or coach wants to go to a Super Over. Unfortunately, Dasun missed completing the third run,” said Jayasuriya. “But no, there’s no mental block against India. Our batting line-up is strong, and we’ve given them confidence. Chasing 200 (203) is never easy, but we almost did it, which shows the quality we have.”

Sri Lanka started the tournament very well, beating all their opponents in the group stage comfortably. However, they faced their first setback when Bangladesh defeated them in the first match of the Super Four stage. Their struggles continued in the next match, where Pakistan finished the game in 18 overs. Reflecting on their journey in the tournament, Jayasuriya explained the reasons for their defeats in these two games.

“The disappointment was the Bangladesh match in the Super Four – 168 on that pitch was a good score, but we didn’t bowl well enough to defend it. Against Pakistan, we didn’t assess the conditions [in Abu Dhabi] quickly enough, and were late to adapt,” added Jayasuriya.
