Sri Lanka opener Pathum Nissanka smashed his maiden T20I century against India in the last match, as his team bowed out of the Asia Cup 2025 after losing three games on the bounce.

Chasing a challenging target of 203, Sri Lanka lost their first wicket with just seven runs on the board. Nissanka stitched together a crucial partnership of 127 runs off 70 balls with Kusal Perera, which provided much-needed stability to the Sri Lankan innings. While the partnership was ongoing, it looked as though Sri Lanka would win the match comfortably. It was the third-highest partnership for Sri Lanka in T20Is. However, with no other significant stands, the match eventually went to a Super Over.

Nissanka was brilliant right from the start, beginning the innings with a four off the very first ball. The 27-year-old reached his fifty in just 25 balls – the fastest of his career. He brought up his century by hitting the last ball of the 17th over for six. However, he was dismissed on the first ball of the final over by Harshit Rana.

None of the Indian bowlers found any respite from his destructive batting. Had he remained at the crease until the end, it would have been difficult for India to take the match to a Super Over. The Sri Lankan opener scored 107 off 58 balls, including seven fours and six sixes, at a blistering strike rate of 184.48. This is now the highest individual score by any Sri Lankan men’s player in T20Is.
