West Indies bowling coach Ravi Rampaul blamed the lack of assistance from the pitch for the lackluster show with the ball on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

In the 128 overs bowled in the Test so far, West Indies have conceded 448 runs while taking five wickets. On the same pitch, the Indian bowlers bundled out the visitors for 162 on the opening day.

West Indies’ bowlers have bowled well in patches but haven’t done so consistently enough. Conditions didn’t offer much to the bowlers, reckons Rampaul.

“It was a very tough day. We tried different tactical strategies,” Rampaul said at the end of Day 2. “I guess going forward, we could probably stick to that a little bit more. There was nothing much there for the bowlers throughout the day.”

Rampaul lamented the poor batting display in the first innings and pointed out that the early wickets lost in the opening session had put them on the back foot.

“Had we batted a bit better, things would have been different. But early on, we lost those quick wickets, and the ones we lost in the first session put us in this situation,” the former West Indies pacer added.

India lead by 286 runs. They have a set batter at the crease in Ravindra Jadeja, who is unbeaten on 104. With five wickets in hand, the home side will be looking to post a big first-innings total. On the other hand, West Indies will be aiming to take the remaining wickets as early as possible.
