Harmanpreet Kaur-led India have been fined 10 per cent of their match fee by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for maintaining a slow over-rate in the record-breaking third ODI against Australia Women in Delhi.
India were found to be two overs short of the required rate, even after time allowances were taken into account. The slow over-rate was reported by on-field umpires Lauren Agenbag and Janani Narayanan, with support from third umpire Gayathri Venugopalan and fourth umpire Vrinda Rathi.
Harmanpreet accepted both the charge and the proposed sanction, thereby avoiding the need for a formal hearing.
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, players incur a fine of five per cent of their match fee for each over not completed within the allotted time.
In their final assignment before the World Cup, India lost the three-match series to Australia 1–2. Australia won the series opener in Mullanpur, with India levelling in the second match, before the visitors posted a record 412 in the third and deciding ODI. Despite the best efforts of Smriti Mandhana, the hosts could only manage 369, losing the match by 43 runs and the series.
India will begin their World Cup campaign in Guwahati on 30 September against tournament co-hosts Sri Lanka. On the other hand, the most successful team in World Cup history, Australia, will kick off their title defence the following day in Indore against their long-standing rivals, New Zealand.
