The Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 match between India and Pakistan at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium, on Sunday, started with an unusual incident at the toss event. A mistake during the coin toss gave Pakistan captain Fatima Sana the chance to take a decision to bowl first. In fact, it should have gone in India’s favour.

Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur  flipped the coin while Sana made the call. On the microphone, Sana clearly said “tails,” but match referee Shandre Fritz and broadcaster Mel Jones announced that she called it  “heads.” Subsequently, the coin landed on the side of the heads. Due to the mistake made by the officials, Sana was adjudged as the toss winner.

The Pakistan captain accepted the decision and proceeded to make her call. Harmanpreet also did not notice what had happened at that moment.

Fans on social media platforms then posted videos of the incident, which sparked debates. Many fans also wondered whether India might file an official complaint about the toss controversy.

In the ongoing World Cup, India won their first match against Sri Lanka. On the other hand, Pakistan is hoping for a comeback after losing their first match against Bangladesh.
