The Indian women’s team won their first World Cup title by beating South Africa by 52 runs in Navi Mumbai. All-rounder Deepti Sharma was declared Player of the Tournament for her all-round performance throughout the mega event, including the final.
Speaking after the match in the post-match presentation ceremony, Deepti said: “We were very calm. We were always cheering each other up. During every drinks break or any other break we got, we used that time to discuss our plans. As a batting unit, we kept saying that we had to play till the last ball. And as a bowling unit, we focused on bowling our best deliveries. We did exactly that — and we have won the World Cup.”
Deepti was instrumental in India’s victory in the final, scoring 58 crucial runs with the bat in the first innings and taking a match-defining five-wicket haul with the ball. In the process, she became the first Indian player (men or women) to score a fifty and take five wickets in a World Cup knock-out match.
The 28-year-old off-spinner finished as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament, claiming 22 wickets from nine matches. She also scored 215 runs at an average of 30.71, including three fifties.
She thanked her parents for all their support, saying: “I just want to say that I would like to dedicate this trophy to my mum and dad.”
