Indian sports entered uncharted territory on Sunday night in Chennai as the national team clinched its maiden major world squash team title, defeating top seeds Hong Kong, China 3–0 to lift the 2025 SDAT Squash World Cup. On home court, in front of an electric crowd, India delivered a performance that was as composed as it was commanding, a statement momentwhich was years in the making.
The final began with India’s most experienced campaigner, Joshna Chinappa, setting the tone. Facing Ka Yi Lee, Chinappa showcased her tactical nous and big-match temperament, winning 3–1 in a gripping contest that swung the momentum decisively India’s way. Her victory gave the hosts belief and control in a tie where every point mattered.
Abhay Singh followed with a clinical display against Alex Lau, winning 3–0 without allowing his opponent any room to settle. Calm, aggressive and precise, Abhay underlined why he is increasingly seen as the backbone of India’s men’s squash going forward.
The moment of history arrived through teenage sensation Anahat Singh. With the tie decided, the final match involving Velavan Senthilkumar was rendered unnecessary.
India’s journey to the title was equally emphatic, including a stunning semi-final win over defending champions Egypt. This triumph is more than just a trophy, it is validation of India’s sustained investment, depth and belief in squash.
