India Women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur said they should have put up a total of more than 300 to win the first ODI against Australia. After the match, Harmanpreet praised the opponents for their performance.

“We were 20-30 runs short with the bat, our bowlers tried to create opportunities but unfortunately we could not capitalise on those opportunities. They played really good cricket.”

Australia Women beat India Women by eight wickets and 35 balls to spare in the first match of the three match ODI series in New Chandigarh. Despite the loss, Harmanpreet emphasised the importance of staying optimistic.

“The next game is very important and we want to stay positive, looking forward to it. Both innings the pitch played better, but some more positive batting and adding 20-30 more runs, taking our chances might have made a huge difference. We will think and analyse the pitch before the next game. We will try with whatever we have in our side. That was our best combination.” Harmanpreet added.

Winning the toss, India opted to bat. Pratika Rawal and Smriti Mandhana gave India a fantastic start with a 114-run partnership that laid the foundation for a good total, but Australia restricted India to 281/7. Rawal was the highest scorer for India. She scored 64.

Chasing the total, Australia’s Phoebe Litchfield built three important partnerships with Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry, and Beth Mooney that provided the platform for Australia to reach the target easily.

After Litchfield was dismissed for 88, Mooney and Annabel Sutherland took charge and made sure that Australia didn’t lose another wicket before reaching the target. Mooney remained unbeaten on 77, while Litchfield was adjudged the Player of the Match.
