
Day 4 of the World Championships at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo unfolded with some impressive performances.
Kenya’s middle-distance queen Faith Kipyegon cliched her fourth 1500m world title. Hamish Kerr of New Zealand completed a high jump podium sweep. India’s Sarvesh Anil Kushare produced a spirited lifetime best performance with a clearance of 2.28m.
In the hammer throw finals, Canadian legend Ethan Katzberg successfully defended his world title and American Cordell Tinch claimed his maiden crown in the 110m hurdles.
There was a flash of brilliance from Sydney McLaughlin Levrone, as she shattered the American record in the women’s 400m flat, clocking a personal best with a 2025 world leading timing of 48.29s — the fastest in the semis.
Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon — the middle distance queen — reigned supreme in the 1500m. She stamped her authority once again on the global stage. This marked the fourth straight world title for the three-time Olympic champion . She clocked 3:52.15 and finished well ahead of her compatriot Dorcus Ewoi who ran a lifetime best of 3:54.92. Australia’s Jessica Hull claimed bronze with 3:55.16. Kipyegon is only the second woman in history to win four world titles in the same track event.
The high jump witnessed the brilliance of Hamish Kerr. The 29-year-old Kiwi completed the global podium sweep after clearing 2.36m. Kerr now holds titles at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, World Championships, Diamond League and World Indoor Championships.
South Korea’s Woo Sanghyeok secured silver with 2.34m and Czechia’s Jan Stefela and Ukraine’s Oleh Doroshchuk shared bronze at 2.31m. India’s Sarvesh Kushare produced his personal best and also the best ever performance by an Indian in high jump at the Worlds. He finished a creditable joint sixth with the USA’s Tyus Wilson after clearing 2.28m.
America’s Cordell Tinch claimed his first major title in the sprint hurdles. His compatriot, defending champion Grant Holloway, who was the outright favourite before the start of the event, finished eighth in the semi-final in heat 3. Tinch stormed to victory with an impressive sub-13 performance, clocking 12.99s. Jamaican Orlando Bennett won silver in 13.08s. Tyler Mason, also from Jamaica, took the bronze in 13.12s.
The hammer throw maestro Ethan Katzberg produced the fifth longest throw of all time to successfully defend his title. Katzberg opened with 82.66m and unleashed a monstrous lifetime best of 84.70m in his second attempt, which is also the longest throw in the last two decades. Germany’s Merlin Hummel claimed silver with a personal best of 82.77m, while Hungary’s Bence Halasz secured bronze with 82.69m.
