The Indian team of the All India Budo Shoto Kan Karate Association (AIBSKA) came up with a spirited display at the JSKA World Karate Championship held in Japan earlier this month. Competing against top athletes from 34 nations, the Indian contingent demonstrated determination, skill and true martial spirit on one of the grandest stages of global karate.

Leading the medals tally for India, Sri Kumaran captured two gold medals in both Kata and Kumite, exhibiting precise technique and composure under pressure. Matching his remarkable success, Bompu Karlo also seized double gold in Kata and Kumite, signalling India’s steady rise in traditional Shotokan karate. The talented Shreya Gogoi added further glory by winning a silver medal in Kata, her performance noted for grace, control and discipline. The senior team members — Samir Singh, Sanjay Kumar Subba, Suvendu Deb, Abdul Kader, Saptarshi Mukherjee, Selluthurai Ganeshlingam, Abhijit Sutradhar and Dhananjay Paul — delivered commendable performances, advancing through several challenging rounds. They faced some of the finest athletes from Japan, Angola, South Africa, Romania, Germany, Italy, Brazil and the United States, among other top-performing nations.

The entire success of the Indian contingent was guided by the leadership of Shihan Tirthankar Nandy, the founder of AIBSKA, who also served as the official Indian team representative and international judge at the event.

The JSKA World Championship remained a scintillating event, celebrating unity and excellence through martial arts. While the Indian team’s achievements brought immense pride, the championship also highlighted that India’s karatekas need better facilities and funding.
