Indian cricketers will play in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) for the first time inthe sixth edition starting on December 1. Organisers confirmed on Monday that their names will be announced soon. This move is expected to bring new energy and more fans to Sri Lanka’s T20 event.

In a press release, the organisers stated, “For the very first time, Indian cricketers are expected to join the action, their names will be revealed soon, adding a whole new level of excitement for fans across the region.”

Male cricketers contracted with the BCCI are not allowed to participate in overseas T20 leagues. Even those active in the domestic circuit are not given clearance. Recently, Ravichandran Ashwin showed interest in these competitions. There is no restriction on him because he has retired from all forms of cricket played in India.

Tournament Director Samantha Dodanwela said the timing of the league was planned to help players get valuable experience before a busy international year.

“The timing of this edition has been carefully chosen to ensure that players gain maximum exposure and high-quality match practice in the lead-up to a global cricketing year,” Dodanwela said.

The LPL will have 24 matches, including 20 league games and four knockout fixtures. Matches will be played at three prominent venues — R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Pallekele in Kandy, and Rangiri Dambulla Stadium in Dambulla.

Organisers said they expect this season to produce more new stars alongside top international players. “Over the seasons, the LPL has emerged as a breeding ground for fresh talent, with several youngsters making their mark alongside international stars. This year too, we believe the league will throw up exciting new names, who can go on to spring surprises on the world stage ahead of the World Cup.”
