A team of four Indian swimmers from Bengaluru—Vrushali Prasade, Danish Abdi, Anuj Aneja, and Rohan Patnaik—successfully crossed the 34 km English Channel on 11th August 2024, completing the swim in 17 hours 9 minutes. Known for its strong tides, frigid waters, and unpredictable winds, the Channel often stretches beyond its official distance, making it one of the toughest open-water challenges.
The team prepared with a rigorous week-long training camp in Menorca, Spain, where they braved water temperatures of 15°C. Rohan, an IIT graduate and Ironman competitor, reflected on the final stretch, “We could see the shoreline, yet reaching it felt like an insurmountable challenge.” For three hours, they battled the waves to avoid drifting.
Vrushali, the team captain, noted, “Our journey is an inspiration, proving that with determination and collective support, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.” Their success highlights the strength of Indian swimmers on the global stage of open-water swimming.
