Indian Women’s Hockey Team Set for High-Stakes Series in Australia

After wrapping up an intensive month-long training camp, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team is ready to take on a five-match series against Australia, beginning April 26 and running through May 4. The tour kicks off with back-to-back matches against Australia A on April 26 and 27, followed by three games against the senior Australian national side—ranked fifth in the world—on May 1, 2, and 4. All matches will be played at the Perth Hockey Stadium.

The series marks India’s first international outing since their FIH Hockey Pro League campaign earlier this year. The team showed flashes of brilliance in the league, securing two regulation-time victories and a shootout win from eight matches. Their final performance was particularly noteworthy as they held top-ranked Netherlands to a 2-2 draw before clinching the bonus point in a dramatic shootout finish.

The Indian squad, led by captain Salima Tete and vice-captain Navneet Kaur, comprises 26 players. Among the players to watch is drag-flick specialist Deepika, who was instrumental in India’s Pro League run, netting three crucial goals. Defender Udita Singh also made her mark with two goals and strong performances at the back in the games she featured in.

Veteran goalkeeper Savita remains a key presence for the team. Fresh off achieving her 300th international appearance, she continues to be a steady and experienced figure between the posts.

This tour will also see fresh faces in the squad, with five players—Jyoti Singh, Sujata Kujur, Ajmina Kujur, Pooja Yadav, and Mahima Tete—receiving their first call-ups to the senior national side. These matches may mark their international debut, providing a valuable opportunity to integrate into the team’s setup.

Historically, Australia has been a tough opponent for India. Out of 16 encounters, the Aussies have won ten and drawn three. However, India has been steadily improving in recent meetings, including a notable 1-0 victory in the FIH Pro League 2023–24.

Speaking ahead of the series, captain Salima Tete expressed confidence in the team’s preparation. “We’re excited to be playing in Perth and believe that the hard work we’ve put in will pay off. The entire squad is motivated, and I’m particularly eager to see how our younger players and debutants rise to the occasion. This tour is an important step as we build momentum for the upcoming Pro League matches in Europe.”

Chief Coach Harendra Singh echoed her sentiments, emphasizing the team’s readiness. “Our training camp in Bengaluru was intense and productive. I have full faith in this squad’s ability to take on any opponent. Competing in Australia is always a challenge, but we are fully prepared and focused on delivering strong performances.”
