Trisha Ghosal in Paris
India’s Paralympics campaign received a tremendous boost as Preeti Pal, the inspiring para-athlete from Uttar Pradesh, clinched the bronze medal in the Women’s 100m T35 final at the Paris Paralympics 2024. This victory marks Preeti’s second bronze on the world stage, following her remarkable performance in the 200m event at the World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan, earlier this year.
Preeti’s journey to this moment has been nothing short of extraordinary. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age, she faced immense challenges growing up in Meerut, where access to proper treatment was limited. However, her passion for running and her unwavering determination kept her dreams alive. The turning point in her career came when she moved to Delhi and began training under the expert guidance of Coach Gajendra Singh at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. With the support of initiatives like the Khelo India scheme, Preeti gained access to top-notch training facilities that honed her skills and prepared her for the global stage.
Preeti is also competing in her favourite event, the 200m, where she is a strong contender for a silver medal. Her success in the 100m has already energized Team India and set a positive tone for the country’s athletics contingent at the Paris Paralympics. With a third medal for the Indian Paralympic contingent, the campaign has gained momentum.
