Team India defeated England in the final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 at The Oval by just six runs to level the series 2-2. It turned out to be India’s narrowest victory in terms of runs in their Test cricket history.

Here are the top three narrowest victories in India’s Test history:

6 runs – vs England, 2025

Mohammed Siraj bowled a dream spell on the final day of the fifth Test to help India beat England by six runs. Nair scored a fifty in the first innings, while Siraj and Prasidh Krishna took four wickets each to restrict England to a slender lead of 23 runs.

India batted brilliantly in their second innings. With a century from Yashasvi Jaiswal and significant contributions from Akash Deep, Washington Sundar, and Ravindra Jadeja, they set England a target of 374. Siraj then picked up a five-wicket haul and Krishna took four more to give India a historic win. Siraj was adjudged Player of the Match.

13 runs – vs Australia, 2004

In the fourth Test during Australia’s tour of India in 2004 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India defeated Australia by 13 runs in a low-scoring thriller.

India struggled in the first innings and were bundled out for just 104. However, Anil Kumble took a five-wicket haul and Murali Kartik picked up four wickets to keep the hosts in the game, despite Australia gaining a 99-run lead.

In the second innings, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar scored crucial fifties to take India to 205, setting a target of 107 for Australia. Harbhajan Singh claimed a five-wicket haul, and Kartik took three more to seal a thrilling victory. Kartik was named Player of the Match.

28 runs – vs England, 1972

Bhagwath Chandrasekhar was outstanding, claiming nine wickets in total — five in the first innings and four in the second.
