According to a report, Shreyas Iyer, a middle-order batter for the Indian cricket team, is unlikely to return for the Asia Cup 2023 because of persistent back pain. Iyer recently received an injection for his back pain at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) but is still experiencing discomfort. This setback gives him less than three months to recover and regain full fitness in order to secure a spot in the ODI World Cup 2023 squad.
Iyer’s last international appearance was in March 2023 during the Ahmedabad Test against Australia. Unfortunately, his injury ruled him out of the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season. Nitish Rana took over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captaincy in his absence. Furthermore, Iyer also missed the World Test Championship (WTC) final after undergoing surgery in London in May. Ajinkya Rahane replaced him and was the only Indian player to score a half-century in the match.
Currently, Iyer is at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, along with Rishabh Pant and JaspritBumrah. While Pant is making rapid progress in his recovery and Bumrah is bowling short spells in the nets, Iyer is still struggling with back pain despite undergoing physiotherapy.
In ODIs, Iyer has a commendable record, scoring 1,631 runs from 38 innings at an average of 46.60, including two centuries and 14 half-centuries.
In Iyer’s absence, Suryakumar Yadav might have an extended opportunity in the middleorder, despite his average performance in ODI cricket. Additionally, Sanju Samson has been recalled by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to the ODI squad for the upcoming West Indies tour. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad have also been included in the Test squad.
The Indian ODI squad for the West Indies tour: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Surya Kumar Yadav, Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik, and Mukesh Kumar.
That’s the latest update on Shreyas Iyer’s injury, and his chances of returning to the cricket field for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023.
