Delhi Capitals (DC) will be without vice-captain Faf du Plessis, pacer Mitchell Starc, and all-rounder Donavon Ferreira for the remainder of IPL 2025, as the trio has opted not to return to India. Their absence further depletes a squad that has already been stretched thin this season.
Speculation around Starc’s unavailability had been circulating for some time. With the World Test Championship (WTC) final approaching, the rescheduling of the IPL has posed a challenge for several international players. Starc has chosen to remain in Australia to prepare for the WTC, as the team looks to defend its title. Jake Fraser-McGurk has already conveyed that he will be missing the rest of the season due to some undisclosed reasons.
DC left with limited resources
The withdrawals of Du Plessis and Ferreira have only added to Delhi’s concerns. With these departures, the franchise is now left with just three confirmed overseas players: Tristan Stubbs from South Africa, Afghanistan’s Sediqullah Atal, and Sri Lanka’s Dushmantha Chameera.
Earlier in the season, England’s Harry Brook had also pulled out, and the Capitals delayed naming his replacement. Now, with four overseas players unavailable, the team is expected to actively seek reinforcements. Other franchises, such as Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans, and Lucknow Super Giants, have already named their replacement signings—something DC must consider to stay competitive.
With limited overseas options, the Capitals will rely heavily on their Indian core to push for a playoff spot. Their next fixture is against Gujarat Titans at home in Delhi on May 18, a day after the tournament resumes.
