Gujarat Titans (GT) clinched a thrilling three-wicket win against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the ongoing IPL 2025 at Wankhede Stadium. With this win, GT returned to the top of the table with 16 points from 11 games and a net run rate of +0.793.

In a rain-affected match full of twists, GT chased down a revised target of 147 in 19 overs. This victory ended MI’s six-match winning streak. They are fourth on the table with 14 points from 12 games and a net run rate of +1.156.

Chasing 155, GT got off to a decent start despite losing the in-form Sai Sudharsan early. Jos Buttler and captain Shubman Gill built a partnership as GT were 68/1 after 10 overs. In the 12th over, Ashwani Kumar dismissed Buttler, following a successful DRS review by MI skipper Hardik Pandya.

Sherfane Rutherford came in as an impact substitute and made an immediate mark. He hit two fours and a six off Will Jacks, followed by another six against Ashwani. GT scored 28 runs in two overs before rain stopped play at 107/2. At that point, GT were eight runs ahead on the DLS method.

After a 25-minute break, the game resumed, and MI’s pace trio — Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Ashwani — turned the tide. Bumrah bowled Gill for 43 (46), Boult dismissed Rutherford for 28 (15), and Bumrah followed up by removing Shahrukh Khan. Ashwani then got Rashid Khan. GT were reduced to 132/6 at the end of 18 overs, scoring only 25 runs in four overs while losing four wickets.

Rain interrupted play again, and the match was reduced to a 19-over chase. GT now needed 15 runs off the last six balls. Rahul Tewatia and Gerald Coetzee were at the crease as Deepak Chahar came on to bowl the final over. Tewatia hit a four off the first ball, and Coetzee smashed a six on the third. With just four needed off three balls, Chahar bowled a no-ball, making the equation even easier. Though he dismissed Coetzee on the fifth ball, Arshad Khan managed a single off the last delivery to seal the win for GT. Pandya had a chance to run out Arshad with a direct hit but missed, leaving MI fans heartbroken.

Earlier, MI posted 155/8 in 20 overs. Jacks scored 53 off 35 balls, Suryakumar Yadav made 35 off 24, and Corbin Bosch added 27 off 22. Sai Kishore took two wickets, while five other bowlers chipped in with one each.

Speaking to the broadcaster after the loss, MI captain Pandya admitted that his team fell short with the bat. “Fought well with the total we had. (There were) times when we were out of the game, but we pushed as a group. It was a game of margins. It was definitely not a 150-wicket. It was a 175-wicket, we were short by 20-25-30 runs. Credit to the bowlers. They kept fighting, and we could not finish (the job).”
