Two captains, Shreyas Iyer of Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians (MI), respectively, were fined after both teams maintained a slow over rate during Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad on Sunday, June 1.
The match was delayed due to rain in Ahmedabad, which came after the toss. However, as per the BCCI’s updated rules, the game was allowed to be completed since an additional two hours are now allotted to complete a full match.
It was MI’s third slow over rate offence, and Hardik was fined ₹30 lakhs for this, while Iyer was fined ₹24 lakhs, as this was PBKS’ second such incident. The other members of the PBKS team were fined 25% of their match fees or ₹6 lakhs—whichever was lesser—while MI players were fined ₹12 lakhs or 50% of their match fees, whichever was lesser.
PBKS to face RCB in the IPL 2025 Final on 3 June in Ahmedabad
Hardik will not face a suspension, even though he missed the first match of this season due to a slow over-rate offence in the previous season, as the rules were amended at the start of the current season.
PBKS knocked MI out of IPL 2025 comprehensively, chasing a big target of 204 runs with one over to spare and winning the match by five wickets. Iyer was adjudged Player of the Match as he led the team from the front with a captain’s knock of 87* runs off 41 balls, at a strike rate of 212.20. His innings included five fours and eight sixes.
