Punjab Kings (PBKS) have named Australian all-rounder Mitchell Owen as a replacement for the injured Glenn Maxwell for the remainder of IPL 2025. Maxwell has been ruled out of the tournament due to a broken finger, and PBKS have turned to the explosive 23-year-old from Tasmania to fill the void.
Owen made headlines earlier this year with a sensational knock in the Big Bash League (BBL) final on January 27. Playing for the Hobart Hurricanes, he smashed the fastest century in BBL history, reaching the milestone in just 39 balls. His innings of 108 off 42 balls, which included eleven sixes and six fours, helped his team pull off a dramatic chase in the title clash. That knock also marked the fastest century ever in a men’s T20 final, further highlighting his growing reputation as a powerful striker.
Australian legend Ricky Ponting praised the knock, stating: “There are not many players in the world who can do that.” That praise added weight to what has been a breakout year for Owen.
Mitchell Owen was playing in the ongoing PSL for Peshawar Zalmi
Owen made his List A debut for Tasmania in 2021 and his first-class debut in 2023. Although he debuted in the BBL in 2021, it wasn’t until the 2024 season that he got consistent opportunities with the Hobart Hurricanes. He made the most of them, emerging as the top run-scorer in BBL 14 with 452 runs in 11 matches, including two centuries. His first ton of the season came against the Perth Scorchers, when he scored an unbeaten 101 off 64 deliveries, including nine boundaries and five sixes, guiding his side to a dominant eight-wicket win.
In addition to his BBL heroics, Owen was recently signed by the Paarl Royals in the SA20 as a replacement for England’s Joe Root, who was unavailable due to national duties. He continued to stay active on the T20 circuit, representing Peshawar Zalmi in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL). However, he had a quiet run there, scoring only 101 runs in seven innings. His final PSL appearance came on Friday, 2 May, and just two days later, he is set to join PBKS in the IPL.
