Ravichandran Ashwin has officially announced the end of his journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The veteran off-spinner announced his decision through a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), where he also revealed that he is now looking forward to playing in different leagues around the world.
“Special day and hence a special beginning,” posted Ashwin.“They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.
“Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me.” He finished the post with thehashtag #cricketforlife.
Since his IPL debut in 2009, Ashwin has represented five different franchises. He began his journey with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and then played for Punjab Kings (PBKS), Delhi Capitals (DC) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) before returning to CSK last season. In total, he played 221 matches where he bowled 4710 deliveries and took 187 wickets at an average of 30.22 and economy rate of 7.20. With the bat, he scored 833 runs in 98 innings at a strike-rate of 118.15.
In December 2024, Ashwin announced his retirement from Test Cricket during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Now, with this step, he becomes eligible to join overseas leagues, just like Dinesh Karthik and Piyush Chawla, who has registered himself for the player auction ahead of South Africa’s SA20tournament.
