The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gave the green light on Monday, May 17, for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season to go ahead. However, with uncertainty surrounding the return of overseas players, the decision is expected to have a considerable impact on several teams set to miss key personnel. Jake Fraser-McGurk has confirmed he will not be returning, while Mitchell Starc has reportedly communicated the same through his manager.
Condemning the decision, former Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings pacer Mitchell Johnson has issued a blunt statement, voicing his support for the players’ well-being and safety in light of recent tensions that arose just a week ago.
Johnson’s Message to the BCCI
Speaking out in support of the overseas players amidst the ongoing uncertainty over their return, Johnson raised concerns about pressure from the BCCI.
In his column for The West Australian, Johnson wrote: “If I had to make a call whether to head back to India and finish the tournament, it would be an easy decision. It’s a no from me. Lives and safety are the most important thing, not pay cheques. It’s a personal decision. No one should be coerced or feel pressured into going back, even if the IPL and Pakistan Super League, which has also been halted, push hard for it. Both tournaments should just end now or consider moving, which then becomes a huge financial issue.”
Royal Challengers Bengaluru will take on Kolkata Knight Riders at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in the first match after the restart.
