India Women’s batter Shafali Verma returns to the squad for the upcoming T20I series against England, which begins on 28 June. In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Shafali shared how her time away from the team has helped her mature and focus on her growth as a cricketer. She said she has become smarter with the bat and now shows more respect to quality bowlers, specifically mentioning two England players.
“At the start, I was carefree and hit every ball I faced,” Shafali told Hindustan Times. “I enjoyed dominating bowlers, going for big shots. I’ve matured as a cricketer and value my wicket more. I want to contribute in every game so that my team benefits. I wouldn’t say my style has changed much, but yes, I will be more defensive at times and give respect to good bowlers. England have strong bowlers like Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone, so I won’t just throw my wicket away.”
Shafali eyes ICC Women’s ODI World Cup in India & Sri Lanka
Following the T20I series, Shafali is looking ahead to the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka this September. She was left out of recent India squads due to a dip in form, but her return marks a second chance as she trains in Bengaluru for the England series.
“It is a matter of pride that India is hosting. I’m sure the team will do well and make the most of the home advantage. For now, my focus is on performing well in the T20Is against England. I hope to leave a strong impression, and then it’s up to the selectors,” she said.
“Representing your country is a dream come true. I’ve fought through setbacks and turned them into motivation through hard work. Now, I’m looking forward to playing big innings for India and showing my positive intent,” she added.
