Jacob Bethell will lead England, in place of regular white-ball captain Harry Brook, in the upcoming three-match T20I series against Ireland. At just 21 years of age, Bethell will become the youngest men’s captain in England’s history. Before him, this record belonged to Monty Bowden, who led England in 1888/89.
England Men’s Selector Luke Wright spoke about how Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities, saying: “Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads, and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage.”
England will play a three-match home ODI and T20I series, respectively, against South Africa before leaving for Ireland for the three-match T20I series. Twenty-two-year-old Sonny Baker has also got a maiden call-up to the England team.
He is part of the ODI squad against South Africa and the T20I squad against Ireland. Rehan Ahmed, the leg-spinner, has impressed with his batting too in domestic matches, and he is also part of all three squads that have been announced.
