Veteran Bangladesh pacer Jahanara Alam has accused the current senior Women’s team captain Nigar Sultana Joty of physically abusing junior cricketers—an allegation that has been rejected by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
In a recent interview with the Bangladeshi daily Kaler Kantho, Jahanara made the startling claim, saying that Joty beats her fellow teammates.
“This is nothing new. Joty beats up the juniors a lot,” Alam said. “Even during this World Cup, the juniors told me, ‘No, I won’t do this again. Then I’ll have to get slapped again.’ I heard from some people, ‘I got beaten up yesterday.’ Even during the Dubai tour, she called a junior into the room and slapped her.”
Alam, who last played for Bangladesh in December 2024, explained that a decline in the team’s environment over the years led her to step away to focus on her mental health.
“Actually, I am not alone; everyone in the Bangladesh team is more or less a victim. Everyone’s suffering is different. Here, one or two people receive advanced facilities, and in some cases, only one person does,” Alam said.
In response, the BCB rejected the claims against the captain, describing them as both “baseless and unfortunate.”
“The BCB categorically and strongly refutes these allegations, which are baseless, fabricated and devoid of any truth,” it said in a statement. “The Board finds it unfortunate that such derogatory and scandalous claims have been made at a time when the Bangladesh Women’s Team is showing commendable progress and unity on the international stage,” adding that it has “found no evidence to support any of the claims made.”
Under Joty’s captaincy, Bangladesh won only one game and finished seventh in the recent Women’s World Cup, which was won by India.
