World Boxing Cup Astana champion Jaismine Lamboria advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool after an emphatic victory over Brazil’s two-time Olympian Jucielen Cerqueira Romeu in the women’s 57kg division.

The two had previously clashed in the Astana final, where Jaismine edged past Romeu in a closely fought contest. This time, however, the Indian boxer left no room for doubt as she dominated all three rounds to secure a unanimous 5-0 win. With this result, she now stands just one win away from a guaranteed medal at the world event.

India has sent a 20-member squad to compete at the inaugural World Championships, which are being organised by World Boxing — the newly established international governing body for the sport. The team is aiming for strong performances across both men’s and women’s categories.

In the men’s 65kg division, World Boxing Cup silver medallist Abhinash Jamwal also kept India’s hopes alive. He produced a commanding 5-0 win over Mexico’s Hugo Barron to progress further.

On the other hand, the campaign ended for two Indian women boxers. Sakshi bowed out in the 54kg category after losing 0-5 to Turkey’s Hatice Akba in the round of 16. Sanamacha Chanu also suffered defeat, going down 0-5 against Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova in her 70kg bout.

India’s challenge continues on Monday with four more boxers chasing quarterfinal berths. Sachin (men’s 60kg) is set to meet Biibars Zhexen of Kazakhstan, Sumit (men’s 75kg) will fight Bulgaria’s Rami Kiwan, Narender (men’s 90+ kg) takes on Italy’s Diego Lenzi, and Neeraj Phogat will face local favourite Sacha Hickey of England in the women’s 65kg category.
