Yashasvi Jaiswal will join the Mumbai squad for the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), a top Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) official has confirmed. Rohit Sharma, who is retired from T20Is, is unlikely to feature in the domestic T20 tournament, although he is all but certain to turn up for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting on December 24.
“Yashasvi has confirmed his participation for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy,” the official told RevSportz, adding: “We haven’t heard anything from Rohit yet.”
Jaiswal, fresh from his maiden ODI century against South Africa in Vizag on Saturday, is not in the Indian T20I squad that will play a five-match series against the Proteas. The opener is a domestic cricket regular when he is not on the national team duty. He has already played a Ranji Trophy match this season as well, scoring a blazing second-innings hundred against Rajasthan.
Mumbai are currently in Lucknow for the group phase of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where they top Elite Group A with five wins from six matches. Their final group league game is against Odisha on Monday. The next phase of the tournament will see the top two teams from each of the four Elite Groups qualify for the Super League. It will be played in Pune on December 12, 14 and 16, with the final taking place on December 18.
