Mohun Bagan Super Giant secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium in Kolkata tonight. Jason Cummings delivered the decisive strike for the home team, in a match where Chennaiyin FC came close to scoring on several occasions.
The first half was an exciting contest, with the Marina Machans taking the fight to their opponents. Head coach Owen Coyle had emphasised before the game that his team had the ability to shine in high-pressure situations, and they proved his words true early on.
Lalrinliana Hnamte and Ryan Edwards created promising chances in the 25th and 30th minutes, respectively. Hnamte’s long-range effort was thwarted by Mohun Bagan’s disciplined defense, while Edwards’ powerful header from Pachuau Laldinpuia’s clever pass was also denied.

Eight minutes later, Subhasish Bose’s corner for Mohun Bagan reached Liston Colaco at the edge of the box, but Colaco’s ambitious strike sailed high and wide. Both teams headed into the break without scoring.
Chennaiyin FC continued to dominate early in the second half, with Wilmar Jordan Gil and Connor Shields orchestrating their attack. Shields’ pinpoint cross in the 54th minute just missed its mark, and another excellent delivery to Elsinho in the 63rd minute saw the latter’s weak header fail to find the net.
Ultimately, Chennaiyin FC’s missed opportunities proved costly. In the 86th minute, Mohun Bagan’s Greg Stewart set up Jason Cummings with a precise pass, and Cummings coolly slotted the ball home with his left foot. Stewart, who has been instrumental in the final third, recorded his fourth assist of the season, securing all three points for the Mariners.
