Kerala’s para powerlifter Joby Mathew is defying age and limitations, chasing Paralympic glory at 51. The 48-year-old clinched gold in the 65kg category at the Khelo India Para Games (KIPG) 2025, improving on his silver finish from the previous edition.
Born with Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency, a condition that left him with underdeveloped legs, Joby has remained an active athlete for over 25 years. He has four international gold medals, including a standout performance at the 2022 Asia-Oceania World Championship, where he topped four categories.
Despite missing out on the Paris Paralympics due to unforeseen circumstances, Joby remains undeterred. “Age doesn’t matter. I am ready to work hard. My dream is to win a Paralympic gold for India,” he said.
The Bharat Petroleum manager is now preparing for the Para Powerlifting World Cup in Egypt this October—a crucial step towards fulfilling his LA 2028 ambition.
Lauding the KIPG platform, Joby highlighted its importance for veteran para athletes seeking selection for global events. “This is an important platform, especially with officials seriously evaluating performances,” he said.
With unwavering determination, Joby Mathew continues to inspire the next generation of para athletes.
